First half of the year in Idol acting: only Suzy gets praise

On June 25, Suzy received a high rating from viewers, following MBC’s completed drama Monday/Tuesday show Gu Family Book. Suzy led the series as the main character until the end, unharmed, and because of this, she dashed to the #1 spot in midst of the viewer’s ratings competition, changing the harsh criticisms to favorable reviews.

Unfortunately, other Idols aren’t faring as well as Suzy, including KARA’s Han Seung Yeon, Dal Shabet’s Ah Young, and 2AM’s Lim Seul Ong.

Han Seung Yeon and Ah Young appeared in SBS’s Jang Ok Jung, Live in Love who get “intertwined” with main characters Kim Tae Hee and Yoo Ah In, so their active roles were anticipated, however with some adjustments to the original plan, their roles shrunk, thus they were unable to grasp the chance to properly demonstrate their acting chops.

In KBS 2TV’s The Fugitive of Joseon, Lim Seul Ong kept his cool regardless of the situation, and gave a solid three-dimensional performance, saying lines with an obvious passion. Although he gradually showed stability in his improving acting skills during the early debate, he still faced low viewer’s ratings.

KARA’s Gyuri and Wonder Girl’s Yoo Bin also took a shot at acting in MBC QueeN’s Nail Shop Paris and OCN’s The Virus, but despite their big names, were not able to generate viewer praise.

A representative from one drama production company stated, “The casting of idols solely due to their popularity has been long gone. Though their main job is being a singer, only the idols who steadily prepare for acting can survive on the real stage.”
